Kansas City is a design-lover’s dream

a love letter to some of our favorite local spots creating (and curating) really good design.

A Little Design Takeover in Kansas City

Kansas City has quietly become that girl when it comes to design. From packaging you want to keep forever to storefronts that stop you mid-walk, local businesses here are clearly paying attention to the details — and we love to see it.

We rounded up some of our favorite KC spots creating (or curating) really good design. Think shelves, walls, menus, mugs, and everything in between.

on the shelf

Mean Mule Distilling Co

Mean Mule’s agave spirits are such a good example of clean, on-brand label design. Created by a talented local designer, the branding pulls in Southwest desert vibes with traditional, vintage-style illustrations that feel full of character. It kind of gives old saloon / ranch energy in the best way — rich in storytelling and always catching the eye when it’s on the shelf. The whole lineup feels cohesive, but each bottle still gets its own little moment to shine.

Untamed Supply

Located inside 12th Street Post in the West Bottoms, Untamed Supply is a local, hand-poured soy candle company. Many of us been making the switch to 100% pure soy wax, and we love that we can support a local business while doing it. Their scents lean earthy and grounded, but the whole collection still feels beautifully connected.
It’s such a good example of how one strong, consistent design — especially a clean, distinctive typography system — can stretch across tons of scents and products and still feel totally cohesive.

Duet

Right in the heart of the Crossroads, I love Duet simply because it’s packed with curated art and home goods that feel thoughtful and elevated. Bonus points for unique packaging moments (Up Chocolate and Boy Smells, we see you).

Billie’s Grocery

If you’re looking for packaging inspo, Billie’s is doing it right. Between Fishwife tinned seafood and Siesta Co., the shelves are full of bold color.

On the Walls

Paulina Otero

Wearable art inspired by architecture from her home country, Mexico. She specializes in textile and fiber design and jewelry with bold shapes, rich color, and the most fun energy. She does jewelry workshops and pop-ups around KC including: bag charms, earrings, necklaces, and phone cases.  And to make this one even more special, she was in my graduating class in college (and yes — she’s also a great friend 💛).

honorable mentions (purely for curb appeal)

  • Front Range Coffee (Waldo neighborhood favorite)

  • Take Care Coffee (arguably the best coffee in KC)

  • Gallup Map Company (vintage maps = instant design crush)

  • Boulevard Brewery (all-around design inspo)

Other Local Businesses Doing Cool Things

  • Garden House Coffee — a cozy, local coffee shop with cups & mugs you actually want to take home <3

  • Take Care by Oleo (arguably the best coffee in KC) — an urban, community-driven cafe with Midwest charm baked right in (literally — pastries made in-house) Their storefront, with bold, western-style typography and rich red and blue colors always catches my eye.

  • Happy Habitat  —KC-founded, eco-friendly, and known for bold geometric patterns and blocky color. Blankets, throws, knits, and scarves you’ll spot in local shops like Urbana and Jorjy.

Brighten Made in KC

We’re proud to say Brighten Made gets to leave our mark in KC. We’ve helped craft brand identities, packaging, and signage, for some wonderful brands. From boutique shops to pet companies, seeing our work out in the wild (and when running a neighborhood errand) never gets old.

Pink Antlers

A Brighten Made-designed brand located in Town Center Plaza in Leawood. Pink Antlers is one of those stores that instantly reminds you why thoughtful retail still matters. When owner Claire reached out to us in 2021, the goal was to build a true one-stop celebration shop, and she’s done just that. The shelves are packed with curated finds that spark ideas, the experience feels cohesive (and branded, hey) from door to checkout, and the whole space encourages you to celebrate the big stuff and the everyday stuff.

Land of Paws

Another Brighten Made-branded biz, located off 135th Street in Overland Park. Land of Paws has been a KC staple for nearly three decades, originally founded as the city’s first pet boutique and now run by two sisters who have brought it into a new era. They reached out to us after deciding to close their flagship location and double down on growing their online presence (spoiler: you need a good website for that, ya know). It’s still the go-to for natural pet food, elevated accessories, and that neighborhood-shop energy people love, just with better branding.
